QUESTION POSED ON: 18 November 2004
Even small businesses have document overflow. Without the ability to invest in a document retention application, how should SMBs manage their documents, files and folders on a network? Are there uniform naming conventions or other practices to assist in this matter? This question is a level below storage infrastructure and data back up procedures. This is about finding files amongst thousands on a network.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Indeed, Small Businesses do have "document overflow," retention and compliance requirements. There are document file plans available without having to develop your own. You can go to www.aiim.org and search on "file plans" to start. I highly recommend looking at the work others have done. You are on the right track about establishing naming conventions and setting up procedures as the low-cost way to start.
