DEFINITION - DCML (Data Center Markup Language), based on Extensible Markup Language (XML), is a data format and model for exchanging information that describes a data center environment. DCML is intended to provide a common description of a data center - including servers, workstations, computer peripherals, storage systems, operating systems, and application programs - as well as other information needed by the various management systems that an enterprise might choose to use.

According to its specification, DCML allows an enterprise to describe the state of the data center environment; a "blueprint" for developing an automation system to manage the environment; and the set of policies, rules, and standards to be used in managing the environment. Ideally, DCML would allow an enterprise to anticipate and automate the management of the data center rather than requiring the continual manual intervention that has traditionally been needed.
